Carol Coteus: Hospicare Fund Raising
I'm participating in Women Swimmin' to raise money for Hospicare & Palliative Care Services. The funds I raise will provide medical expertise and emotional, spiritual and practical support to patients and their families.
Your donation to Women Swimmin' will help make this important end-of-life care available to anyone in Tompkins or Cortland counties who needs it--regardless of their ability to pay.
In 1976 I enrolled in a course called "On Death and Dying", partly because my own Mother had passed away just 7 years prior and I was still coping with that, and partly because it fulfilled 3 necessary credits. The coursework followed the book under the same title, which Elizabeth Kubler Ross wrote in 1969 after her observations of the treatment of dying patients in the United States. Disregard, isolation, and overall impersonal treatment of these people moved her to make a change. Through years of leturing, she brought light to the concept of the Hospice Care Movement., arguing that patients deserved not only respect and compassion but ultimately a choice in their end of life destiny. Through her work she displayed the benefits of home health care and support, which facilitate much needed emotional, spiritual, and financial assistance.
Those 3 credits opened my eyes and provided clarity to many unanswered questions in my own life, resulting in my continued support of Hospice Care.
On August 12th I will be joining 300 other women to raise funds for Hospicare and Palliative Care Services. We will swim across Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes in the Adirondacks. This is my first fund raiser, an important one which touches us all. So, please help me out and throw a few coins my way. I'll put them to good use if I sink half way across the lake! HAHA!
With gratitude and love,
